The Project

Since 2010, the port area of Rio de Janeiro has undergone accelerated structural and architectural changes that also transformed the use of public spaces. The Port Sounds (Sons do Porto) project was born in order to accompany these changes, focusing on the sound aspect.

The sound is an important variant of the urban experience that can give clues about how people relate to the city. Space and sound have intimate relationships. The sound creates territories and itself is also modified by cultural manifestations, social and physical place.

The Port Sounds project stimulates the aural experience. The acoustic environment can give us information about our model of development and culture. This work was initiated during Claudia Holanda's doctorate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro at COPPE / LTDS, and was developed in partnership with the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast, during her internship in Northern Ireland with support from CAPES Foundation.

The research and field recordings were initiated in late 2014 when the works in the region had begun. Therefore, to bring the previous memory of this period we have the valuable accounts of residents and people who work or are knowledgeable in the area.

This map follows a process - the transformation of the port area - thus, in essence, is a work in progress. You can collaborate with the construction of the map sending sound records, giving suggestions and statements about the region. In the first phase of the Port Sounds project, the records took place in the Morro da Conceição, Pedra do Sal, Largo da Prainha and Praça Mauá, still containing records from other locations, but in smaller quantities. The choice of this area happened to be there where there are major structural changes arising from the redevelopment project implemented by the city called Porto Maravilha.

This map contains narratives of residents and records the soundscape as a dynamic collection that seeks to accompany this time of change.
